Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Portland, Connecticut. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing and our extensive network of testing centers across all U.S. cities ensure that your needs are met. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used for testing. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a reliable method. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are mandating these tests over standard urine tests. Hair drug tests are crucial for organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The key advantage lies in the extensive detection period—up to 90 days—and the observed collection, minimizing the chances of tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain unparalleled in precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a crucial method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by sequestering biomarkers in the strands' fibers. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection range reaching roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of hair. We advise measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp cannot be obtained, the same amount of body hair can be used as an alternative. Mention of head hair specifically indicates scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key steps in processing a drug test result in a laboratory setting are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase of inputting a sample into the laboratory's workflow. This process ensures that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient means to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be validated before acceptance in court. Samples that appear positive in Screening undergo a secondary validation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

All positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. Every phase from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and in alignment with ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditations.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can trace drug intake over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result precision.
  • Reveals usage history: It can indicate a trend of drug consumption over an extended period, rather than just recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are usually pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair strands.

Note: While often called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Portland, CT, hair follicle drug testing stands out against the traditional urine tests as the superior choice. Its heightened detection accuracy ensures that no substance use goes unnoticed, providing undeniable reliability in results.

The benefits of hair testing over urine tests are evident; while urine tests are limited by a shorter detection window, hair tests provide a deeper insight into substance use history over the past 90 days.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an unparalleled detection window, covering up to 90 days of drug use, making it ideal for Portland, CT employers seeking a comprehensive review of an individual’s substance history.

This extended timeframe allows for a more reliable assessment of long-term habits, providing employers with a thorough understanding of an applicant or employee's past drug use.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
