Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Quinebaug, Connecticut. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair evaluations, and our centers can perform these tests across all major cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is sufficient. Hair tests may be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other unique testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly becoming part of the procedure for drug screening. Many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair drug tests to the traditional urine versions. These tests are favored by institutions with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and those on probation. One key advantage is the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process, making it highly reliable. However, urine tests remain the most precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair can exhibit a long-term history of alcohol and other drugs. When collected near the scalp, hair can show a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equal to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, considered the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to obtain 150mg of the specimen. We advocate for weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be harvested. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This process involves checking that the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial swift check for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to rule out drug use for most specimens, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. This procedure involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is very tough, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical insight: Hair drug tests can show a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost considerations: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual disparities in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", this test analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
