Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockville, CT. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing is backed by numerous centers nationwide, including Rockville. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, usually from the crown, are needed. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a popular method for detection. Employers, legal institutions, and substance professionals now often prefer it over urine testing. It’s particularly favored by those with strict no-drug policies. Its main advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, and its observed collection process that makes cheating nearly impossible. However, for recent drug consumption (within 5 days), urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol use. The fibers in hair strands capture biomarkers, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure for an estimated 3-month period. The collection process is straightforward, hard to alter, and easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or over 10 panels tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in processing a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample’s initial entry into a lab's system. This involves ensuring the sample's seal and appropriate shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening serves as an initial examination for drugs of abuse. Although Screening efficiently excludes drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive screen is necessary for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive must undergo secondary verification.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This step involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), underscoring hair drug screening's complexity.

Confirmation of a presumptive positive result utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Unlike urine tests with shorter detection limits, hair tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, increasing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical patterns: This method shows a drug use timeline, not just current intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent consumption: Drugs typically become detectable in hair within 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair testing is generally costlier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and growth rate differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug tests in Rockville, CT, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in several ways. Its superior detection accuracy and reliability make it a top choice. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
