Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Sterling, Connecticut. For those in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair, our centers located in every city nationwide specialize in these tests. Generally, hair from the head (1.5 to 2 inches) or body can be used. Hair samples are analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

The trend of employing hair follicle drug testing has gained momentum in recent years. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over conventional urine tests. This method is favored by employers with stringent drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation due to its extended detection window, which can reveal drug use history for up to 90 days, and its near-immunity to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now perceived as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged view of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can show a detection window for alcohol and drugs that spans about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of nearly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, the suggested amount is 150mg of the sample. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for precise weighing of the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be sourced. When we speak of head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory process of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if the electronic chain of custody system does not provide it.

Screening entails a preliminary quick assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption for most samples, yet a positive finding must be corroborated for legal acceptability. Samples that have a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a specimen yield a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from the hair at substantially lower concentrations than seen in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The full laboratory pathway from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification, as well as the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection scope.
  • Resistant to deceit: It is notably challenging to manipulate the results of a hair drug test, resulting in enhanced accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a chronological pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle and urine tests in Sterling, CT, hair testing regularly comes out on top. It offers superior detection accuracy over traditional methods, giving employers a reliable insight into long-term substance use.

While urine tests are limited to detecting recent use, hair tests uncover patterns up to 90 days, offering more reliable results in detecting drug usage over time.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Sterling, CT have a unique advantage with their extended detection period. With the ability to detect drug use up to 90 days prior, they offer employers a thorough history of an individual's substance use.

This extensive window provides a more comprehensive view of an applicant's or employee's drug use, aiding in informed hiring and personnel decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Sterling, CT, hair follicle tests stand as a tamper-resistant method to ascertain drug use, substantially minimizing the risk of sample adulteration.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
