At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Stonington, Connecticut. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialization in hair testing ensures we can assist you. With testing centers across Nationwide cities, getting a hair test is convenient. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is sufficient for these tests, which detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as a method of conducting drug tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and those overseeing probation. Hair follicle tests offer a major advantage with their extended drug detection capabilities, up to 90 days, and an observed collection process that minimizes cheating. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests are still the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely acknowledged as an effective method for identifying substance use, providing a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers in hair fibers. Hair, when collected near the scalp, offers a detection range of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, less susceptible to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirming. For tests that include EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial integration of a sample into the lab system, ensuring it was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data input outside of an electronic custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick evaluation for substance presence. Although it is cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admittance. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

For a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at concentrations lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed if necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection range.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and growth rate can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination involves the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Stonington, CT Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine testing, particularly in areas like reliability and detection precision. In Stonington, this testing method has proven to be superior, identifying drug use with greater accuracy over longer periods, which urine tests cannot match.

For employers and individuals seeking comprehensive substance use insights, hair testing's longer detection window is significant. Unlike urine tests which are limited to recent use, hair tests provide a more thorough view of an individual's substance history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Stonington, CT One of the key benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, offering insights into drug use over an impressive timespan of up to 90 days. This extended period provides a comprehensive view that is particularly useful for employers in Stonington evaluating past substance use.

By opting for hair tests, employers gain access to a historical account of substance use, rather than just capturing recent usage. This allows for informed decision-making when assessing potential employees or monitoring current ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
