Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Warren, Connecticut. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in these tests and provide testing facilities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are needed. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors now often require hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing suits zero-tolerance policies, probationers, and court requirements due to its longer detection window—up to 90 days—collected under supervision and is difficult to tamper with. However, urine testing remains the best for detecting recent use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug use, as biomarkers are locked into the growing hair fiber. When sourced near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A specimen measuring 1.5 inches, comprising approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the standard amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional testing, or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is best to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. Note that when referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s records. This step verifies the sample’s sealing and shipping correctness, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills any data gaps not addressed by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of concern. Although Screening efficiently rules out drug use for most samples, court acceptance requires confirmation of any positive screen. Any samples yielding presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation testing.

For specimens presumed positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is retrieved for the Extraction process. During Extraction, substances are removed from the hair at concentrations significantly lower compared to other techniques (for instance, urine or saliva testing), underscoring why hair drug testing is considered a challenging methodology.

Verification of any positive result is through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair tests trace drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which offer a shorter period.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, bolstering result credibility.
  • Offers users historical insight: It shows a drug use pattern over a duration, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair tests usually incur higher costs than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
