Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Watertown, Connecticut. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, our facilities are available in all cities across the country, ready to administer hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other needs.

Hair follicle tests have become a more prevalent method of drug testing recently. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are preferred by entities with strict drug policies as they provide a detection period of up to 90 days, collect samples in a supervised manner, and are nearly foolproof. However, a urine test remains the most accurate for detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair tests have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair seize biomarkers within the fibers, offering an extended record of alcohol and drug use. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Additionally, hair collection is straightforward, quite hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis. When conducting EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent portion of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically imply scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The testing of a drug sample in the laboratory involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s procedures, ensuring it was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning it a temporary Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any necessary extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a cursory examination for drug use. While Screening is an economical means to eliminate drug use for numerous samples, a positive result requires verification to be permissible in legal settings. Any sample showing a presumptive positive in Screening mandates further verification.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair in much lesser concentrations than other testing methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug screening is considerably complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positives are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair qualification and meets the criteria of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection duration: Hair testing can disclose drug use for as many as 90 days, contrasting urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly difficult to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Yields historical information: It can depict a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unfit for recent usage detection: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally carry a higher cost than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing provides a superior alternative to urine tests in Watertown, CT. Extending the detection window up to 90 days, it captures a broader timeline of substance use, offering invaluable insights for employers.
Whereas traditional urine tests can highlight drug use within a more limited timeframe, hair testing's comprehensive approach makes it ideal in contexts where long-term substance history is significant.

The accuracy and reliability of hair analysis surpass urine tests, limiting potential for sample tampering or false negatives. For businesses enforcing zero-tolerance policies, hair testing presents unmatched capability in maintaining informed oversight over employee compliance with drug regulations.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Watertown, CT is a key advantage. Covering up to 90 days of drug use, it helps employers see a detailed history rather than short-term snapshots. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
