Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screening services in Westbrook Center, Connecticut. Whether you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in these assessments with facilities across the country. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from your scalp, though body hair is also acceptable. Our tests ascertain drug, alcohol/ETG, or customized substance details.

Recently, there has been a shift to include hair follicle tests for drug detection more often. More employers, judicial systems, and addiction counselors are opting for hair testing over traditional urine analyses. Hair drug tests are preferred due to their zero-tolerance efficiency for drugs by employers, judicial orders, or probation requirements. A major advantage is the lengthy 90-day detection period, observed sample collection, and high resistance to tampering. For recent drug use, a urine test is preferred for its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. It offers a lengthy history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

Gathering a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) from the scalp provides around 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, or when testing involves more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's preferable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it relates specifically to scalp hair; in contrast, body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and armpit hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processes a drug test sample through four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preparing the sample for the lab's system, which includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipping were done correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any omitted data from a digital chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary, swift assessment for substance use. While it’s an economical choice for dismissing drug use in many samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptability. All presumptive positive samples from the Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those in other testing methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a challenging technique to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technology is used to confirm any positive screening outcomes. Any samples identified as presumptive positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. This entire process is audited from Accessioning to Confirmation according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical record: It provides insight into patterns of drug use over time rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become evident in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other types of testing.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels can vary due to factors like hair color and growth disparities.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Westbrook Center, CT. Hair testing offers broader detection, capturing substance use history up to 90 days, compared to the narrower window of urine tests. Hair tests exhibit better accuracy and resistance to alteration, making them a superior choice over traditional urine analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window offers immense benefits in Westbrook Center, CT. Hair follicle testing uncovers substance usage over an extensive period of up to 90 days, providing a thorough view of an individual's consumption history. This prolonged detection capability assists employers seeking a comprehensive understanding of employee substance habits.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
