In Woodbury Center, Connecticut, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we have centers nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or elsewhere on the body is needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has become more prevalent in recent years. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its ability to detect drug use over a longer period, typically up to 90 days, providing nearly foolproof results, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers within its developing strands, offering an extended timeframe for tracing substances. Proximity to the scalp ensures hair can reveal substance usage for up to nearly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen's weight on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. In specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively, while body hair encompasses all other varieties (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. It entails checking that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, giving it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While efficient for excluding drug use in a majority of cases, a positive screening must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that are presumably positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

For a sample deemed presumably positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to ready it for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair in far lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging technique to administer.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumably positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab activities from Accessioning to Confirmation undergo examination under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Tampering with a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It presents a pattern of substance usage over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing surpass urine testing in Woodbury Center, CT? One significant advantage is the enhanced detection accuracy. Hair tests can screen for drug use over an extended period, unlike the shorter detection window of urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
