Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Ardentown, Delaware. For those requiring a hair or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers available nationwide, including every city, offering hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are needed from the head or body for testing. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for custom analysis.

Recently, hair follicle testing for substance use has become increasingly popular. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests are essential for organizations with strict anti-drug use policies, used by the legal system, and for individuals on probation. Key advantages include a 90-day drug detection period, observed collection, and high cheating resistance. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of substances and alcohol by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair that's growing. When collected from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs extending to about 3 months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment with approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will deliver 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for screening and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When denoting head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for generating a drug test result involves four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the primary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It includes checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as an initial fast check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screen still requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any Screening results that are presumed positive do require further secondary authentication.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is detached from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs get extracted from hair in concentrations much lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to conduct.

Verification of positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The whole laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which feature a shorter window.
  • Challenging to dodge: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely complicated, enhancing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a drug usage pattern over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't show recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Important: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
