Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bowers, Delaware. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers in cities nationwide ready to assist. Typically, a hair sample from the crown or body (1.5 to 2 inches) is sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can also be customized to meet specific testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle tests. They are increasingly requested by employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Zero-tolerance policies often mandate hair tests due to their extended detection time—up to 90 days—and because they're difficult to tamper with. Despite this, urine tests remain the most reliable for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When clipped close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol exposure for up to roughly 90 days. It is easy to obtain, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of head hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of inputting a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for detecting drug usage. It is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, yet a positive result must be verified to be legally valid. Samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical overview: It provides insight into drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Bowers, DE Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy over urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
