In Centerville, Delaware, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing. Our centers, available in all cities across the nation, are equipped to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is necessary. Analyze hair tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or explore other customized options.

In recent years, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers utilize these tests. The primary advantage is a longer detection period, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair records a long-term history of alcohol and other substances by holding biomarkers within the hairs' fibers as they grow. When taken from near the scalp, hair offers nearly a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch strand collection consisting of roughly 200 hairs (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggestive. In cases where scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. Scalp hair pertains solely to head hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (e.g. facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in processing a lab drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the first phase where the sample is integrated into the lab's records. This step ensures the sample was accurately sealed and sent, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any extra data missing from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid examination for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to negate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires validation for court acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where the specimen is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from the hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (for instance, urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being notably challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screen is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Shows usage history: It can reveal a user's drug pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become evident in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug-testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations may influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
