Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Claymont, Delaware. If you're in need of a reliable hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers accessible across all cities Nationwide. For most cases, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for substance detection over recent years. Both employers and courts often prefer them over urine tests. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance policies, court-mandated screenings, and probation checks. The primary advantage is their longer detection window, spanning up to 90 days, ensuring tests are observed and nearly impossible to manipulate. However, urine tests remain precise for recent drug use checks within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol presence by embedding markers within the hair strand as it grows. When obtained from the area nearest to the scalp, hair samples can provide insights into a period of roughly three months for both alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil), situated closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for the presence of illicit drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that yield a positive indication in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to alternative approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging methodology.

Any positive indication from Screening is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can recognize substance use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a more limited timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating in a hair drug test is notably difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of substance use patterns, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
