At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug screens in Fenwick Island, Delaware. Whether for drug or alcohol reasons, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities spread across the nation, ready to assist. Typically, you'd need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head; alternatively, body hair might suffice. Our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair analysis options.

Recently, drug screening methods have increasingly included hair follicle tests. This method, favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, is replacing traditional urine samples. Zero-tolerance organizations prefer these tests due to their extensive detection window of up to 90 days. Because of supervised collections, cheating is unlikely. Yet, for identifying drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests exceed in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying substance use. Hair captures a prolonged history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the threads of the developing hair. When gathered near the head, hair can offer up to a roughly 90-day observation period for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A portion measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair threads (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, regarded as the optimal sample for assessment and validation. For EtG, supplement tests, and/or analyses surpassing 10 panels, a 150mg portion of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair not be present, a matching quantity of body hair might be used. Head hair denotes scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test entails four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the sample's initial processing into a laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening comprises a preliminary swift assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly technique to dismiss drug consumption on most samples, a result indicating drug presence necessitates validation to be court-acceptable. Any samples indicating drug presence during Screening need a follow-up verification.

If drug presence is suggested in the Screening phase, more hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. Here, substances are withdrawn from hair at a drastically lower concentration compared to alternative approaches (like urine or saliva), marking hair drug screening as the most complex approach to carry out.

Verification of any positive screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample indicating drug presence is cleansed ahead of confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug assessments detect substance use for up to 90 days, contrasted with urine tests that have a shorter observation period.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug assessments are hard to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical data: They reflect a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to be observable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug assessments are costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination scrutinizes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair Follicle Testing Advantage in Fenwick Island, DE
In contrast to the traditional urine drug tests, hair follicle testing presents significant benefits in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. With a longer detection window, hair testing can reveal consistent substance use patterns, offering a clearer picture to employers and legal authorities, and is an ideal choice for comprehensive assessments.

Reliability Over Traditional Methods
Urine tests, while useful, fall short compared to the consistency and superior accuracy of hair tests. They often miss long-term substance use, making hair follicle testing an essential tool for zero-tolerance policies, where reliable detection is paramount in maintaining workplace standards.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Fenwick Island, DE
Offering a comprehensive look into an individual’s substance use history, hair follicle testing's extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, provides a broad view for employers and authorities, aiding in making informed decisions regarding employment and legal matters.

Comprehensive Substance History Insight
Employers find value in hair testing due to its ability to unveil patterns of consumption over a prolonged period. This extensive detection window is unmatched by traditional urine tests, which only provide a snapshot of recent drug use, making hair testing invaluable for long-term insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Secure Drug Testing in Fenwick Island, DE
Hair follicle testing significantly minimizes the chances of tampering, providing an untampered insight into an individual’s history of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
