Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in Pike Creek Valley, Delaware. Our specialization in hair drug and alcohol testing is matched by our vast network of testing centers nationwide, ensuring easy access to testing services. Typically, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, whether from the crown or body. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in drug testing methods. A growing number of employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair testing over the traditional urine method. This preference is due to its longer detection window, up to 90 days, and its resistance to tampering, alongside the fact it is conducted under observation. However, for screening drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a significant method for identifying substance use, including alcohol. The hair strand captures biomarkers along its growing fibers, offering a comprehensive view of drug and alcohol history. When hair is clipped near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug consumption for nearly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transportation.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample comprises a 1.5-inch piece from around 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, totaling 100mg of hair. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be substituted. Head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory process includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates with integrating a sample into the laboratory system, ensuring it was securely sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data requirements not covered by electronic custody systems.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substance misuse. While it is a cost-effective strategy for excluding drug use in numerous samples, positive screens must undergo verification to be recognized legally. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In instances of a positive indication during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

All positive screening outcomes are authenticated through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Pre-confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is certified under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Can identify drug use approximately 90 days back, unlike shorter-range urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: The tests are incredibly challenging to skew, ensuring greater reliability.
  • Chronological usage data: Reveals drug use patterns over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become visible in hair about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair are influenced by factors like hair color and unique hair growth rates.

Note: Though termed “hair follicle tests,” the examination focuses on the strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
