Accredited Drug Testing offers a full range of hair follicle drug tests in Saint Georges, Delaware. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair tests, and we have facilities in cities across the country capable of conducting these. Usually, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body for testing. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests are increasingly part of the drug testing methodologies. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair testing over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by entities that enforce strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The chief advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, observed during collection, and nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a potent resource for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When procured near the scalp, this analysis offers about a three-month detection period for substances such as alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG tests, additional panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, a proportionate quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any extra data entry not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be court admissible. Samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive at the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair in significantly lower concentrations than alternative methodologies (e.g., urine, or oral fluid), which renders hair drug analysis the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All assumed positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a narrower detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Presents historical information: It can display a trend of substance use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saint Georges, DE, hair follicle testing often surpasses traditional urine testing by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can detect substance use over a longer period, providing a comprehensive view of an individual's history, a distinct advantage over the limited window of urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
