Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Selbyville, Delaware. If you require testing for hair drugs or alcohol, our specialty in hair testing is backed by nationwide testing centers ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body are sufficient. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more common choice for drug testing methodology. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug use policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Hair follicle tests are advantageous due to their extended detection period, often up to 90 days—they are collected under observation, making evasion virtually impossible. However, for detecting recent substance use—within 5 days—the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged record of drug and alcohol usage by preserving biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When strands are taken close to the scalp, they can establish up to a 90-day detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair samples are easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, or those over 10 panels, 150mg of sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step where a sample is introduced to the laboratory system. Steps include ensuring the sample is properly sealed and sent, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not included in an electronic chain of custody.

Screening quickly checks for drugs of abuse initially. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be corroborated to be valid in legal contexts. Samples indicating a positive result in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples hinting positive at the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this process, drugs are retrieved from hair at very low concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is a challenging procedure.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to falsify: It's highly challenging to manipulate hair drug test results, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historical insight: They provide an overview of drug use patterns over time, instead of just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other types of drug tests.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although they're commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
