Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Wyoming, Delaware. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, boasting testing centers in cities across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body available. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other specialty testing options.

In recent times, the trend for drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. An increasing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair drug tests over conventional urine assays. Hair tests are the choice for employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals subject to probation. The main advantage of a hair test is its extended detection time, usually up to 90 days, and it cannot be easily falsified. Yet, for recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests still hold the upper hand in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a record-keeper for drugs and alcohol by preserving biomarkers within the strands as hair grows. When samples are cut close to the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of up to three months for substances. It is straightforward to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, will yield about 100mg, which is the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or extensions beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair should be used. When referencing head hair, it's about scalp hair exclusively. Body hair pertains to any other hair types (such as facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a specimen is first processed into a lab’s workflow. This step includes checking that the specimen was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary quick examination for drugs. Although it's a budget-friendly way to exclude drug use in most specimens, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

When a specimen tests positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening especially challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have shorter spans.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Gives historical insights: It can map out drug patterns over time, instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing types.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth disparities can impact metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test targets the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
