Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Alcoma, Florida. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair testing, and our centers span all cities Nationwide to deliver a thorough examination. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body for analysis to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards including hair follicle assessments more frequently. Many businesses, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests serve employers with strict policies against drug use, legal authorities, and probationary surveillance, offering an extended detection period for substances, usually lasting up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is difficult to manipulate. Although, urine tests remain most effective for identifying drug usage in the preceding five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record by encasing biomarkers within its growing fibers. By gathering hair near the scalp, a detection window for alcohol and drugs spans up to 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp provides 100mg, perfect for screening and verification. For EtG, additional elements, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. If scalp hair isn't an option, body hair of equal measure can be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages of lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first phase, introducing a sample into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any pending electronic chain of custody data entry.

Screening offers an initial drug usage assessment. It is an economical measure for eliminating drug usage in most cases, but a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptance. All presumptively positive samples in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Presumed positives in the Screening phase undergo further hair removal from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening quite challenging.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples presumptively undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug testing identifies usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Its resistance to tampering results in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical analysis: Offers insights into usage patterns over time, not just current consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically pricier compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variance can impact metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the advantages of hair testing over traditional urine tests in Alcoma, FL, it becomes evident that hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. The thoroughness of hair tests provides a greater assurance that prior substance use is accurately identified, giving these methods a clear edge over urine-based assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
