Located in Altoona, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, they specialize in hair analysis with facilities in cities across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed to conduct these tests, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations and individuals with strict drug-free policies due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection procedure, and difficulty to manipulate. However, for identifying recent drug consumption, within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferable choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fiber of the growing hair shaft. When sampled close to the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step confirms the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to stand in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results from Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations lower than in alternate methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug testing as the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over a timespan of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: This test can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

While traditional urine tests are common, hair follicle testing in Altoona, FL, offers significant advantages. Its superior detection accuracy makes it a preferred option for many employers seeking reliable results.

The longer detection window of hair follicle tests gives a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use, offering a more thorough evaluation than urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
