In Miami, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a detection for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities ready to conduct hair assessments. To undergo this test, approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is generally needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

The popularity of using hair follicle drug tests as opposed to traditional methods has grown significantly in recent years. Companies, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair drug tests rather than the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are adopted by strict employers, the court system, and probation officers, given their zero-tolerance stance on drug usage. The significant advantage of hair follicle tests is their increased detection window, usually up to a 90-day period, conducted under supervision, making them extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair encapsulates a prolonged chronology of drugs and alcohol through the entrapment of biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer close to a 3-month window of detection for various substances, including alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, which is optimal for screening and confirmations. To test for EtG, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is advised. If scalp hair is unattainable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair implies other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory is comprised of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and captures any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody platform.

Screening conducts a preliminary evaluation for abused substances. Screening is cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, yet any positive findings must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive outcome in Screening require additional confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive readings at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample for Extraction. At this stage, drug elements are extracted from hair at noticeably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), thus making hair drug analysis the most complex technique.

Any positive screening outcome is validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumed positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 standards' accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug analysis can identify drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Insights into usage history: It reveals patterns of drug use over durations, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair requires roughly 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually examines the hair strand rather than the roots beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outperform urine testing? Hair tests offer an extended window of detection compared to urine tests, giving an accurate representation of drug habits over months rather than days. This is especially beneficial for employers in Miami, FL, seeking reliable substance use detection methods. The accuracy and difficulty in evading detection make hair testing a superior choice.

Extended Detection Window

In Miami, FL, hair follicle testing stands out for its extended detection window, offering insights into drug use over a much longer term of up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
