Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Aripeka, Florida. If you're in need of a hair substance test, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched. With centers across all U.S. cities, a hair test can easily be arranged. As long as you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body, drug, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair tests can be conducted.

In the past few years, drug tests have increasingly turned to hair follicle testing as the preferred method. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now often demand hair tests rather than typical urine screenings. For organizations with strict no-drug policies, or for monitored individuals like those on probation, hair tests provide key advantages, chiefly a detection window of up to 90 days that's hard to tamper with. Yet, for substance use within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a detailed history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the hair's growing fiber. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. “Head hair” refers exclusively to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample within a laboratory's operations. This step includes verification of sample sealing and proper shipment, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry beyond that provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift initial evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

In the event of a positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirming any presumptive positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to outsmart: Resorting to deceit is incredibly challenging with hair drug tests, enhancing result reliability.
  • Presents historical insights: Offers a timeline of drug utilization instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to discern recent use: Drugs only become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug evaluations are costlier than alternative drug detection methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests," these assessments evaluate the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

    Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
