Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair drug testing services in Avalon Beach, Florida. Those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis can rely on our specialized hair testing services, available through our vast network of centers in cities across the country. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is needed for the test. Our hair tests can be designed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. This approach is increasingly preferred by employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation departments often choose hair testing. Key advantages include a detection window of up to 90 days, tested under supervised conditions, and minimal chances of tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise option for detecting drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged record of substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When clipped close to the root, it can offer a drug and alcohol detection period of up to around 90 days. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hairs (roughly equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample amount for analyses. For EtG tests, additional analytes, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is suggested. It's advised to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The process of analyzing a drug test result in a laboratory involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is entered into the lab's system. This step includes confirming that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial cursory test for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results in Screening require further Confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that test positive during Screening will necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. This procedure extracts drugs from hair at substantially lower levels compared to other testing techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), explaining why hair drug analysis is the most challenging to conduct.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques are employed for Confirmation of any positive results from Screening. All samples that indicate a presumptive positive are cleansed as necessary prior to Confirmation. The comprehensive process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can trace drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which detect more recent usage.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to deceive, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage trends: It can delineate usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited to past use: Drugs typically take 5-7 days to be detectable in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair attributes such as color and individual growth rates may impact metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine analysis in Avalon Beach, the former emerges superior due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can uncover substance use over a longer period, providing a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug habits.

Employers benefit from the expansive detection window, which allows for detailed evaluations and supports zero-tolerance policies more effectively than urine testing.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Avalon Beach uniquely offer the ability to detect drug use over an extended period, often up to 90 days. This gives employers a panoramic view of an employee or applicant's substance usage history, aiding in more informed hiring and employment decisions.

By offering a prolonged detection timeline, hair tests provide an invaluable tool for ensuring workplace safety and compliance, surpassing the capabilities of more ephemeral testing methods like urine analysis.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Avalon Beach is designed to greatly minimize the risk of sample tampering or adulteration, delivering results that are both reliable and indisputable. The nature of this testing method ensures that results accurately reflect an individual's drug use history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
