Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Becker, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities in every city across the country capable of conducting a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body is needed for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

More often in recent years, drug testing methods include hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now opt for a hair drug test over a conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage is a much longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, using an observed collection process, making it nearly foolproof. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), cut close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest verifying the sample weight with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial procedure of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive result needs validation to be legally credible. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter period.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
