Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Bellview, FL. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol assessments, we excel in this testing method. With locations in major cities across the nation, we facilitate these analyses. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary, and hair tests can evaluate substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

Lately, employing hair follicle drug tests for screenings is becoming more prevalent. A variety of entities—employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals—now prefer hair tests over urine tests. This method is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies towards drugs, the judicial system, and probationers. Their key advantage is a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process, minimizing cheating opportunities. Nonetheless, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests still prevail.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has established itself as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair acts as a permanent record for alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When hair is taken from a spot near the scalp, it can show alcohol and drug presence for up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, with hair being hard to tamper with and easy to ship.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or testing over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a similar amount from other body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we are targeting scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample enters a lab’s system. This stage includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, giving it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and adding any further data not given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a speedy evaluation for drugs. Although Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legality. Any samples with a tentative positive in Screening need an additional confirmation.

If a sample has a tentative positive in Screening, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any suspected positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation gets critically reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, rendering the results more reliable.
  • Shows drug use history: Hair tests can exhibit a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing is more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Several factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that’s analyzed, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
