In Biscayne Park, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing, with facilities across all cities in the nation ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or body hair may be used. Our analyses can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors often opt for a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation systems favor this method. The main advantage is its extended detection time, reaching up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is nearly impossibly fraudulent. For identifying recent drug use within five days, however, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a lengthy record of substance biomarkers within its strand fibers. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer an approximately 3-month insight into alcohol and drug intake. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of about 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, making it the optimal sample for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advised to weigh the hair using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" denotes just scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other varieties (e.g., facial, underarm).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample’s initial logging into a lab’s database, which includes checking the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing additional data logging not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening comprises an initial, swift assessment for drugs. While it's a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal purposes. Samples that yield a tentative positive during Screening need follow-up verification.

If a sample turns out presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral swabs), making hair tests the most demanding type to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike shorter detection times with urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Shows use patterns: It reveals a timeline of drug usage, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Detectable drug levels appear in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug testing is pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Drug metabolite levels in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and growth disparities.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
