Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug analyses in Bloomingdale, Florida. For those seeking hair-based drug or alcohol evaluations, we specialize in hair examinations with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is necessary. Hair assessments can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Hair testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug analysis in recent times. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often favor hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. These tests serve organizations with strict anti-drug policies and are used by courts and probation officers. A key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process, minimizing the chance of tampering. However, for recent drug use, urine tests remain unsurpassed in accuracy over the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands create a long-standing record for alcohol and additional substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collection is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transmit.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for initial tests and validation. For EtG, additional requirements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler's scale for weighing the specimen is advisable. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. In terms of head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four major steps in laboratory processing of drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's framework. This phase includes ensuring that the sample remained sealed and was dispatched correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation to be valid in legal matters. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are released from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods like urine or saliva, which explains why hair drug testing is the most intricate methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter observation period.
  • Difficult to falsify: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
