Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Boulevard Gardens, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing specialist with centers across the nation equipped to facilitate hair testing. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches is needed from the crown or other body areas may be used. Hair analysis can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing needs.

Recently, conducting drug tests has increasingly involved hair follicle analysis. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug screening is essential for employers with strict policies, legal entities, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is its extensive detection timeframe, usually up to 90 days, monitored during collection, and challenging to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and various substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. When speaking of head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for admissibility in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is one of the toughest methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All probable positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to alter the outcome of a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It presents a drug use trend over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot specify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
