Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Boulogne, Florida. For individuals needing a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized testing options.

Recently, the prevalence of hair follicle drug testing has risen. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance management professionals now favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests attract zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary individuals. They offer an extended detection period of up to 90 days, use observed collection methods, and are tough to manipulate. However, for identifying recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it references only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data entries not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick review for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, any positive findings must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo a confirmatory test.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this point, drugs are separated from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug tests:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine analyses which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, yielding more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical use: It provides an account of drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to record recent usage: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically more costly compared to alternative testing techniques.
  • Result discrepancies: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
