Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Bowling Green, Florida. If you require hair drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty lies in hair-based testing with centers across the nation ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more common for drug detection. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse authorities choose hair tests over standard urine tests. These are particularly favored by zero-tolerance workplaces and by courts supervising probationers. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeframe, often reaching up to 90 days, collected under observation, making tampering nearly impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests are the most precise for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly considered an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair provides a detection period for drugs and alcohol up to roughly three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield about 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations over 10 panels, a sample amounting to 150mg is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, the same quantity of body hair can be collected. ‘Head hair’ specifically denotes scalp hair, while ‘body hair’ encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and sent, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is an initial examination to rapidly detect drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated before it can be utilized in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. In this stage, drugs are drawn from the hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical usage insights: It displays a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent use detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost implications: Hair drug tests generally come with a higher price tag compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", these tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bowling Green, FL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests provide shorter detection windows, hair testing can trace drug use over several months, rendering it an invaluable tool for employers striving for comprehensive workplace screening.

The reliability of hair testing is highlighted by its ability to maintain accuracy over extended periods, making it a superior choice for sustained drug use detection. This advantage ensures employers can better enforce zero-tolerance policies and maintain a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Bowling Green, FL, businesses benefit from the extensive detection window offered by hair follicle drug testing, which can trace drug use up to 90 days. This expansive period grants employers a detailed understanding of an individual's substance history, crucial for thorough employee assessments.

By using hair testing, employers access a broader view of potential drug use, extending far beyond the capabilities of other methods. This long-term detection capacity is pivotal for making informed hiring and monitoring decisions, protecting workplace integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Bowling Green, FL, hair follicle testing sets a high standard for tamper-proof drug screening methods. The inherent difficulty in altering hair samples means they provide a more secure and trustworthy means of achieving reliable results compared to other testing options.

The integrity of hair follicle tests stems from their resistance to common adulteration techniques, reducing the chance of false negatives or compromised results. This makes them ideal for settings where accuracy and unquestioned results are paramount.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
