Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Brighton, Florida. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with facilities available nationally. To conduct a test, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is generally necessary. This test screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair assessments.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for substance testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, court systems, and individuals on probation commonly utilize hair follicle tests. A key advantage is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, which is observed during collection and nearly impossible to alter. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can identify drug and alcohol exposure for up to a three-month period. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp constitutes 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result encompasses four core steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step verifies that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening effectively helps eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples presumed positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than alternate methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is a reason why hair drug screening is considered the most challenging technique to execute.

The confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, as required. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is very strenuous to deceive a hair drug test, resulting in more precise findings.
  • Conveys historical data: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over an interval, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot trace recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Outcome variability: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Excels Over Urine Testing in Brighton, FL

Hair follicle testing stands out in Brighton, FL, due to its superior detection and reliability compared to traditional urine tests. Unlike urine tests, which capture a short-term view, hair testing provides an insight into substance use over a more extended period, often up to 90 days, thus enhancing accuracy.

Moreover, hair tests are less prone to tampering, making them a preferred choice for companies with strict no-drug policies. The reliability of hair analyses ensures that potential false negatives or manipulation attempts that can affect urine tests are minimized, leading to a more honest depiction of the individual's drug use history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window: Hair Testing in Brighton, FL

One of the most significant benefits of hair follicle testing in Brighton, FL, is its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug usage up to 90 days prior. This comprehensive approach provides employers a thorough understanding of an individual’s substance use patterns, surpassing the typical limited range of urine tests.

This broader detection horizon enables employers to assess long-term habits, rather than just recent activity, which is invaluable in making informed hiring or employment decisions. This deeper insight supports businesses in maintaining a trustworthy and safe workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
