Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing services in Brownsdale, Florida. We specialize in hair drug and alcohol testing and our facilities are available in cities nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized as needed.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. The hair follicle test suits employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers due to its extended detection window up to 90 days, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests still excel in detecting recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has grown into an essential resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the strands, offering a prolonged timeline of substance usage history. When gathered close to the scalp, it provides a detection period of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t an option, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair alone, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in lab processing for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into the lab's system. It involves ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any additional data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial, rapid assessment for drug presence. While screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in the majority, positive outcomes require confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Presumptively positive samples from screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a screening yields a presumptive positive, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. In this phase, substances are drawn from the hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring why hair testing is particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive found during screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as needed. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug screenings can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine screenings which offer a narrower detection timeframe.
  • Complexity in cheating: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test enhances the reliability of the results.
  • Chronological data provision: It maps a drug consumption pattern over time, rather than detecting only current use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent usage detection: Drugs necessitate around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments generally incur higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Result variances: Elements such as hair color and person-specific hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle itself under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
