Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Canal Point, FL. For those needing drug or alcohol tests, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with centers across all U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the head or body. Hair tests can be configured for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing choices.

Lately, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers often utilize these tests. A major advantage includes a prolonged detection time for drug use, which can last up to 90 days, involves direct sample collection, and is nearly tamper-proof. Yet, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is now recognized as a potent method for identifying the consumption of substances and alcohol. Hair archives a lengthy history of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft's fibers. Captured near the scalp, hair can offer up to an estimated 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal portion for both screening and verification. For EtG enhancements, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s balance to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unattainable, an equivalent bulk of body hair may be collected. Our reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The primary quartet of steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a lab’s database. This process entails checking that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid examination for substances of misuse. Although Screening provides a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive result must be validated to stand in legal settings. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are retrieved from hair at concentrations lower than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is the reason hair drug testing is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as needed. The full laboratory route from Accessioning to Confirmation is screened under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can trace drug uptake up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests, which have a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly tricky to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more dependable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It is capable of showing a timeline of drug use over an extended timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: It requires approximately 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variances: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly denominated as "hair follicle assessments", the evaluation actually examines the hair shaft and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
