Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Charleston Park, Florida. Should you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we have facilities across all cities nationwide equipped to perform a hair test. Typically, hair from the crown or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches, is used. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate customized hair testing options.

More recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a favored method for drug testing. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. This testing is favored by employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probation services. One significant advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window—up to 90 days—through a directly observed collection process, making it highly tamper-resistant. However, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

For screening and validation, a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp is ideal, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for precise measurement is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped. It also involves generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and completing any remaining data input not supported by an electronic chain of custody framework.

The Screening phase quickly checks for the presence of drugs. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Positively flagged samples necessitate a further confirmation stage.

In cases of presumptive positives during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for processing in Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation phase of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Preliminary positive samples are pre-cleaned before Confirmation as required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire lab process is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It shows a timeline of substance use, not just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate use: There is a 5-7 day delay before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing generally involves higher expenses compared to other methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Charleston Park, FL
Compared to conventional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers superior detection capabilities. Hair tests examine drug use over a prolonged window of up to 90 days, providing greater insight into an individual's substance history.

While urine tests only detect most drugs used up to a few days prior, hair testing captures a more extended record of use. This advantage is crucial for employers seeking comprehensive data to maintain zero-tolerance drug policies efficiently.

Additionally, the collection process for hair tests is non-invasive and less prone to tampering, ensuring accurate findings. Thus, hair testing enhances reliability when compared to traditional urine analysis.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Charleston Park, FL
Hair follicle testing's capacity to detect drug use spans a remarkable 90 days, offering a broader perspective on an individual's substance habits. Contrasting with shorter intervals of urine testing, this extended window provides a thorough view over the months prior.

For employers, this means gaining a comprehensive understanding of a potential hire or current employee’s commitment to a drug-free lifestyle, crucial for roles demanding safety and trust.

In a competitive environment, such detailed insights allow businesses to maintain a workforce that aligns with their core values, especially in sectors where adherence to strict substance policies is vital.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Charleston Park, FL
Hair follicle tests serve as a robust countermeasure against sample tampering, significantly lowering risks of adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair samples provide unwavering integrity.

The difficulty of falsifying or substituting hair samples ensures the results remain reliable and undisputed. This makes hair testing an attractive option for situations demanding the highest trust levels in substance use assessments.

Such a tamper-resistant nature of hair testing resonates with employers and legal entities seeking effective ways to ensure the authenticity of their drug testing programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
