Complete hair follicle drug testing services are offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Charlotte Harbor, Florida. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, Accredited Drug Testing operates numerous centers nationwide to carry out such tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is necessary. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized as needed.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular as a method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probationary purposes. The main advantage is a detection window for drug use lasting up to 90 days, with samples collected under observation to prevent tampering. However, for identifying drug use within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When acquired near the head, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for evaluation and validation. For EtG, supplements, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data compilation not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening incorporates an initial swift check for illicit substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be corroborated to be permissible in legal proceedings. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are removed from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex method to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is highly challenging, resulting in more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals patterns of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Detection of drugs in hair requires approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug test modalities.
  • Differences in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
