Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Christmas, Florida. Anyone needing a hair drug or alcohol test will find expertise at Accredited Drug Testing, with centers across all major U.S. cities ready to conduct these tests. Hair must be at least 1.5 to 2 inches long on the head, or body hair can be used in many situations. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for screening substance use. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial reasons, or probation monitoring. The key advantage lies in the extended detection window, up to 90 days, collected securely and tough to falsify. But for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a valuable method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strands. When gathered close to the scalp, a hair sample can reveal up to about a three-month period of drug and alcohol use. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the hair specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used instead. When we refer to head hair, we are specifically discussing scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This process includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of samples, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any necessary data entry not already captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, positive results must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Any samples that return a presumptive positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex procedure.

Positive screening results necessitate Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned prior to Confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Insight into historical use: The test can reveal drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lack of immediacy: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expenses: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the underlying hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Christmas, FL, offers significant advantages over urine testing. Unlike the traditional approach, hair testing boasts higher detection precision and reliability. The ability to identify drug use over extended periods makes it a better choice for employers.

Traditional urine tests, while useful, lack the longevity of detection that hair tests provide. Employers benefit from the extended insights into substance use, which ensures better compliance with zero-tolerance policies.

Extended Detection Window

Christmas, FL, employers gain a comprehensive advantage with hair follicle testing's extended detection window. Unlike temporary screenings, hair tests trace drug use over up to 90 days, offering insight into extended substance history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
