Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Citrus Springs, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we've specialized in this form of testing and maintain centers nationwide for your convenience. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas suffices, and tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more favored method for substance detection. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors are leaning toward this testing over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are beneficial for entities with strict anti-drug policies, offering a longer detection window—up to 90 days—conducted under direct supervision to prevent manipulation, whereas urine tests remain more reliable for recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become acknowledged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding markers within the growing hair strands. When acquired near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month window for detecting substances. The collection of hair samples is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides approximately 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, the recommendation is 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn't available, the same amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional info entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drug presence. While Screening offers a cost-effective means to exclude drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court validity. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly complex procedure.

The Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for a period of up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair test is quite difficult, leading to more reliable findings.
  • Offers historical insights: Provides a pattern of substance usage over time, rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Not suitable for recent usage detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
