Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Cloud Lake, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair evaluations, with facilities across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become the preferred method for substance testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts mandate hair tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation offices utilize hair follicle tests. The main advantage is the extended detection time—up to 90 days—ensured by an observed collection method, making it extremely difficult to tamper with. Yet, for recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its growing strand fibers. When collected close to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within an approximate 3-month span. The collection process is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation procedures. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent body hair sample can be collected. 'Head hair' specifically refers to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for intoxicants. Although it is an economical approach for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation to be legally viable. Any samples indicating potential positivity in Screening need an additional confirmatory test.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), indicating the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Confirmation of any positive result from screening occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples indicating presumptive positivity undergo a washing process before confirmation if required. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer than the detection window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to tamper with, leading to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
