Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Cocoa, Florida. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with testing centers available in every city Nationwide ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or using body hair suffices in most instances. Hair analysis can be conducted for drug screening, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many companies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine exams. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often employ hair follicle testing. The significant advantage of a hair test is its extended detection window for drug usage, generally up to 90 days, and it involves an observed collection process which is exceptionally difficult to compromise. Nonetheless, for screening drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a lengthy history of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over a period of up to three months. It is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of approximately 200 strands near the scalp yields about 100mg, the preferred quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG and additional tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes facial, axillary, and other types.

Overview of the Process

There are four primary steps in processing a drug test in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample in a laboratory setting. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and includes any additional data input that's absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, any positive results must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower in comparison to methods like urine or oral fluid tests, which is why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can determine drug use up to 90 days back, while urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test results in more reliable findings.
  • Tracks usage history: This test can illustrate usage trends over time as opposed to merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days post-consumption to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites detected.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
