In De Land Southwest, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers nationwide provide specialized hair testing services. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair analyses can assess drug use, alcohol/ETG levels, or other bespoke testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly prevalent in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer it to standard urine tests. This method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases due to its prolonged detection period of up to 90 days. Collected through an observed process, it is notably resistant to tampering. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as a compelling instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair contains a prolonged account of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When retrieved near the scalp, hair can deliver about a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar volume of body hair may be gathered. When referencing head hair, this pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases within the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the beginning handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This embraces confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody arrangement.

Screening contains a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening step, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is implemented using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as warranted. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, contrasting urine tests which have a brief detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceptionally hard to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can present a pattern of drug consumption over a span, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual disparities in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair filament and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
