Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Dekle Beach, Florida. If a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis is required, our centers are expertly equipped to conduct these tests, available throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These analyses assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

Of late, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly gained preference over traditional methods. Various employers, judiciary bodies, and substance counselors favor hair testing over urine samples. This method suits organizations with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary settings. A major advantage is the extended detection span reaching up to 90 days and near foolproof collection, though for recent usage under 5 days, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers of alcohol and other drugs within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a longer-term account of substance use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a timeline of up to three months for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, minimally tamperable, and effortlessly transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 strands (approximately equivalent in thickness to a #2 pencil) from nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG and additional tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. In instances where scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

Drug test results in the laboratory are processed through four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is entered into the laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for eliminating suspicions of drug use in many samples, any positive screens require confirmation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples yielding a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair with much lower concentrations compared to other assays (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any presumptive positive result from screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing presumptively positive are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The full laboratory process, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is critically evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can detect drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine testing which detects more recent consumption.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage history: This method offers insight into drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually pertains to the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
