Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Doctor Phillips, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis. If you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our nationwide centers can perform these tests across all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing modules.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly favored for drug screening in recent years. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair analysis over the traditional urine test. Utilizing hair tests, which are preferred in no-tolerance policy environments, offer the benefit of detecting drug use for up to 90 days, with a supervised process that's nearly foolproof. Yet, for detecting usage in the past 5 days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers along their fibers, providing a comprehensive history of substance use over time. If collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands, approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil, nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale, we suggest weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial, axillary, and such.

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result process consists of four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase entails confirming the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any additional data entry tasks omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Despite being an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen necessitates confirmation to be court-acceptable. Samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positive results in the Screening phase, more hair is gathered from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of a positive Screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals usage history: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variations in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing: In Doctor Phillips, FL, hair follicle tests offer heightened accuracy and reliability over urine tests. Hair testing provides a more comprehensive detection window, capturing drug use over an extended period, while urine tests fall short in detecting long-term use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
