Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Durbin, Florida. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available in every city across the nation to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of the head or other body parts. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for unique hair testing needs.

Recently, using hair follicle drug tests has become more common for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle tests serve entities with strict drug-free policies, judicial systems, and those on probation. A key advantage is the considerably longer detection window, reaching up to 90 days, collected in an observed setting and difficult to falsify. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands out as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. Collected near the scalp, hair can provide up to roughly 90 days of drug and alcohol detection. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields about 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and confirming. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is preferred. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be missing, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" pertains exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial sample entry into a lab’s system. This stage includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary scan for drug abuse. While it is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most cases, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need a further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Preparation. In this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a more complex process.

Verification of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that show presumptive positivity are washed before verification if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug intake for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, leading to more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
