Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in East Dunbar, FL. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol assessments, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair analyses, with testing facilities available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body hair suffice for most instances. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or include tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing procedures have increasingly favored hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine assessments. Hair follicle tests are popular among employers with stringent drug use policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, with samples collected under observed conditions, making them highly resistant to tampering. However, for tracking recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. This method captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, it provides a detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG tests, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair is not obtainable, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four essential stages in the laboratory's processing of drug test outcomes: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first stage where a sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry that the electronic chain of custody system may not provide.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substances of abuse. Although cost-efficient for eliminating drug utilization in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Therefore, samples with presumptive positive results during Screening need secondary confirmation.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening a challenging procedure.

Any presumptive positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning through Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: This test can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, substantially longer than the shorter window offered by urine tests.
  • Resistance to falsification: The complexity of cheating a hair drug test increases result reliability.
  • Chronological data: It can display a timeline of drug usage, unlike tests that only show recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is actually of the hair strand and does not involve the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
