Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in East Naples, Florida. If you are in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide centers prepared to conduct such tests. It requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Courts, employers, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer it over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict drug policies, the judiciary, and probation oversight. The key advantage is the ability to detect drug use over a more extended period, up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection and being virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests still offer the most accurate results for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an impactful method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the follicles of the developing hair shaft. Hair collected near the scalp can potentially offer an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch section with around 200 strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It's preferable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data input not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be permissible in legal proceedings. Every sample provisionally positive in Screening necessitates a secondary validation.

Should a sample be provisionally positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are retrieved from hair at considerably lesser concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being the most challenging method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating provisional positivity undergo a washing process before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug usage up to 90 days, opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Difficult to circumvent: Hair drug tests are very challenging to manipulate, ensuring result fidelity.
  • Offers historical insight: It furnishes a timeline of drug consumption across an interval, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently identified as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
