Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle screening services in East Perrine, Florida. For those requiring a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, with service centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair assessments can be utilized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or for custom testing scenarios.

Recently, the approach to drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle analysis. This method is being mandated more often by employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse specialists. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and probation guidelines are opting for hair drug testing due to its longer drug detection span, up to 90 days, and its inherent resistance to tampering. However, when assessing drug consumption over the prior 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to approximately a 3-month window to detect alcohol and drugs. This makes hair easy to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A strand of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of roughly 200 strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide about 100 mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150 mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four main stages in the laboratory process for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial entry of a sample into the laboratory system. It involves ensuring the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial fast check for drug abuse. While Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that show presumptive positives in Screening need secondary verification.

If the sample is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are pulled from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the toughest methodology to execute.

Any positive screening result is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo a washing process before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to cheat: It is very difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It can show a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
