Located in East Wakulla, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair tests, they provide these services nationwide. Typically, the test requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Hair analysis can be customized to check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have emerged as a commonly employed method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, courts, and for probation checks. The extended detection timeframe of up to 90 days offers a significant advantage, as the test is observed and highly resistant to tampering. Nonetheless, for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair gives an extended account of alcohol and other drugs presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present nearly a 3-month detection window for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to alter, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, representing the optimum sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen utilizing a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, a similar amount of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is primarily segmented into Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system, which includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data entry requirements not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a rapid preliminary drug abuse check. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for it to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives from Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample demonstrate presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original specimen and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration in comparison to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening methodology.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples suspected positive are cleaned before Confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure spanning Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug exposure for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, boosting accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing mechanisms.
  • Result variability: Variables, including hair color and personal hair growth differences, can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the hair follicle underneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In East Wakulla, FL, when comparing hair follicle testing against traditional urine tests, the benefits become clear. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy, capturing a longer history of substance use. This makes them more reliable for employers and other stakeholders who need trustworthy results to uphold policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
