Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Eaton Park, Florida. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with numerous centers across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your scalp, but body hair can also be used in many situations. These tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

More recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this over traditional urine testing. Hair follicle tests are favored by zero-tolerance workplaces, legal entities, and probation officers for their extended detection capabilities—up to 90 days—and their inability to be circumvented. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise way to detect drug use in the previous five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug usage by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use within a detection span of roughly three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (about pencil-thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirming. For EtG, supplemental tests, or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a proportionate amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves these four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes other necessary data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drug abuse. Although a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result from this stage needs confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a complex procedure.

The Confirmation stage for any positive results uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: Offers an overview of drug use patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternate methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
