Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug screening services in Eglin AFB, Florida. For those requiring a hair or alcohol drug test, we specialize in hair testing and have sites across all U.S. cities for performing hair analyses. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair in most cases. Hair can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, drug testing increasingly employs hair follicle methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle exams are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and parolees due to their extended drug use detection window, typically up to 90 days, and their observed and tamper-proof collection method. Contrarily, urine tests remain most precise for detecting recent drug use (within 5 days).

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by preserving biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it develops. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an approximately 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If head hair is not accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of incorporating a sample into a lab’s procedures. This process includes confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a primary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be acceptable in legal settings. Samples showing preliminary positive results in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample reflects presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (for example, urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use over periods, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs generally take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure itself evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When weighing the effectiveness of hair follicle versus urine drug testing in Eglin AFB, FL, hair tests clearly excel. These examinations provide superior accuracy and reliability, offering extended detection periods compared to traditional urine tests. Employers gain invaluable insights with this advanced method, ensuring enhanced assessment of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Eglin AFB, FL, provides the advantage of a much longer detection window for assessing drug use. Able to trace substances for up to 90 days, this method grants employers a comprehensive look at an individual's substance use history, offering greater overview than shorter-term urine tests.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

With hair follicle testing implemented in Eglin AFB, FL, risks related to sample tampering are greatly diminished. This method provides results that are both reliable and resistant to manipulation, fostering confidence in the outcome's validity, unlike more easily altered urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
