Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Elfers, Florida. Whether you are looking for a hair drug or alcohol screening, our specialty lies in hair tests. We boast testing locations in every city nationwide that can administer a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored options.

In recent years, the method for conducting drug tests has increasingly featured hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle tests are essential for employers with strict drug use policies, judicial purposes, or for those on probation. The main advantage is a longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, during a monitored collection, making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain accurate for drug detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extensive historical record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weight of 150mg is advised. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent weight of body hair can be acquired. Note, head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair covers any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages involved in processing a drug test result in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples testing as presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests as presumptively positive at the Screening phase, supplementary hair is extracted from the initial sample and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest challenge among methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are subjected to washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a reduced detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is markedly hard to dupe a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can denote drug usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the testing process examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
